The signature of laminar instabilities in the zone of transition to turbulence

چکیده
We demonstrate that the space-time statistics of the birth of turbulent spots in boundary layers can be reconstructed qualitatively from the average behavior of macroscopic measures in the transition zone. The conclusion in [1] that there exists a connection between the patterns in laminar instability and the birth of turbulent spots is strengthened. We examine why the relationship between instability and transition to turbulence is manifest in some cases and appears to be totally absent in others. Novel cellular automaton type simulations of the transition zone are conducted, and the pattern of spot birth is obtained from secondary instability analysis. The validity of the hypothesis of concentrated breakdown, according to which most turbulent spots originate at a particular streamwise location, is assessed. The predictions made lend themselves to straightforward experimental verification.

Numerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model
Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...
متن کاملAerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy
The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...
متن کاملLaminar-Turbulent Patterning in Transitional Flows
Wall-bounded flows experience a transition to turbulence characterized by the coexistence of laminar and turbulent domains in some range of Reynolds number R, the natural control parameter. This transitional regime takes place between an upper threshold Rt above which turbulence is uniform (featureless) and a lower threshold Rg below which any form of turbulence decays, possibly at the end of o...
متن کاملOn Instabilities and Transition in Laminar Separation Bubbles
During the past several years we have performed a considerable amount of investigations of basic instability mechanisms in various laminar separation bubbles. Because of the high sensitivity of the flow with respect to intrusive measurement techniques and the difficulties of computing the flow field via boundary-layer equations or RANS our research relies primarily on direct numerical simulatio...
متن کامل3-D-boundary-layer transition induced by superposed steady and traveling crossflow vortices
Crossflow-induced laminar-turbulent transition and the initial stages of turbulence are investigated by means of spatial direct numerical simulations for the accelerating 3-D flat-plate boundary layer of the ”Querströmungsprinzipexperiment” of the DLR-Göttingen [1]. The complete 3-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved marching in time on the basis of a 4-order Runge-Kutta scheme. ...
